The federal academies and college ROTC programs place a high value in attracting the well-rounded student.  Three criteria stand out as most important:

Past scholarship ability

Leadership initiatives

Noteworthy accomplishments

In addition to class and standardized test scores, factors important in predicting success in college include high school honors, well-written personal statements (application essay), top references, and serious involvement in both academic and non-academic pursuits.

Technical competency
Motivation to excel academically
Breadth of interest
Creativity
Passion for learning
Adaptability

Personal Accomplishment:

Community involvement
Job (fulltime or part-time)
Entrepreneurship

Special talents, i.e. athletics, music, drama, dance, fine art (literature, photography painting, sculpture, crafts, etc.), writing, craftsmanship
