Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC offer very viable alternative paths to an officer commission.

These programs, offered at some 1,200 public and private colleges and universities throughout the country can be attractive to those candidates not seeking a 24/7 military academy environment, but a more typical college atmosphere.

Students enroll in Military Science courses, wear the uniform one day each week and participate in both weekend and summer military exercises and activities.  Scholarships are most often for three years or less.  Currently, the U.S. Air Force is limiting it's scholarship offers to those seeking technical careers.

Scholarship recipients incur a four year active duty service obligation upon graduation and 3-4 years of reserve duty as well.

The Olympic Institute for Leadership Development
recommends three ROTC military junior colleges:  Georgia Military College, Marion Military Institute and New Mexico Military Institute.

All three offer the Army's two year Early Commissioning Program (ECP).  Marion Military Institute and New Mexico Military Institute offer a formal Service Academy Preparatory Program (SAP).  Through these programs an aspiring candidate can demonstrate that they can indeed do college work, improve their SAT/ACT scores and adapt to a military environment.

Below you will find a brief description of each military junior college which was provided by them and a link to their respective websites.

Georgia Military College

"Since being established in 1879, Georgia Military College has remained committed to a fundamental value:  belief in the importance of every person and in full development of the talents of every American citizen.

Today, in keeping with its founding principles, Georgia Military College strives to reduce barriers to higher education, to make it easier for students with modest means to earn a college degree, and to evolve a curriculum to meet an array of personal, economic, and societal needs."

Marion Military Institute

"Since 1842, Marion Military Institute, the nation's oldest military preparatory school and junior college, has achieved a national reputation for preparing young men and women for successful civilian and military careers.  This is accomplished by providing the best possible educational program for it's students in a conservative, disciplined, environment, thereby developing their intellectual, physical, moral, social and leadership capabilities."

New Mexico Military Institute

"The mission of New Mexico Military Institute, as a state-supported school, is to provide the citizens of the State of New Mexico and the nation a college preparatory program in the high school and a college transfer program in the junior college in the disciplined environment of the Corp of Cadets.  Further, the Institute provides instruction to the cadets for leadership and character development, integrity, self-esteem and physical well-being.  The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program is mandatory for all cadets, and the junior college contract cadet has the opportunity to receive an Army commission in two years."
